Who Should Take BALOO?
Any adult who helps plan or attend Cub Scout overnight camping should complete BALOO training.
Scouting America requires at least one BALOO-trained adult to attend every Cub Scout pack or den overnight outdoor event, including pack campouts and Webelos den overnighters. Having trained leaders present helps ensure each camping experience is safe, well planned, and fun for everyone.
What Will You Learn at BALOO?
BALOO gives adult leaders the practical skills needed to plan and lead safe, successful Cub Scout overnight adventures. You will learn how to organize an outing, create engaging outdoor activities, manage safety, and keep the experience connected to the values and goals of Cub Scouting.
A well-planned camping experience builds confidence, creates lasting memories, and keeps Cub Scouts and their families excited about returning for the next adventure.
How Do I Complete BALOO Training?
BALOO training includes two required components that must be completed in order:
- Online training: Complete the online BALOO modules through the BSA Learn Center. Log in to My.Scouting.org to begin. The online portion introduces key concepts so more time can be devoted to practical skills during the in-person course.
- Hands-on training: After completing the online modules, attend the 1.5-day in-person course. This practical training introduces leaders to the Cub Scout outdoor program and provides hands-on experience in planning and leading safe, successful pack camping activities.
Both components are required to complete BALOO training and receive the BALOO recognition patch.
