What Is IOLS?
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, or IOLS, is a hands-on course for Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and other adults who work directly with Scouts in a troop.
Participants work in patrols while learning the outdoor skills expected of Scouts from the Scout rank through First Class. Course instruction closely follows the methods and skills found in the Scout Handbook.
Why Should I Take IOLS?
IOLS gives adult leaders the practical experience and confidence needed to teach basic outdoor skills, support youth leadership, and lead safe, successful outdoor activities.
The course covers essential skills such as camping, cooking, navigation, first aid, knots, fire building, and Leave No Trace principles.
Is IOLS Required?
IOLS and Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training are required for registered Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to be considered fully trained for their positions. Other troop leaders are also encouraged to attend and strengthen their outdoor leadership skills.
