How Youth Can Join Scouting
Young people can join Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts, or Exploring through a local Scouting unit.

How to Become an Adult Volunteer
Scouting depends on caring adults who are willing to share their time, experience, and talents with young people. To become a registered adult volunteer with Sequoia Council, please complete the following steps.
Submit Your Adult Application
Visit BeAScout.org to find a Scouting unit and complete your adult application online.
The annual registration fee for an adult volunteer is $110. Additional unit fees may apply.
Complete Safeguarding Youth Training
All registered adult volunteers must complete Scouting America’s Safeguarding Youth Training before serving with youth.
Visit My.Scouting.org and create an account if you do not already have one. Once signed in, open the Training section and complete the required Safeguarding Youth Training.
Your My.Scouting account should use the same name and email address used on your membership application whenever possible.

Complete the California AB 506 Requirements
Information About AB 506
California Assembly Bill 506 requires volunteers and employees of Youth Service Organizations to complete mandated reporter training and undergo a Live Scan background check. These requirements apply to all registered Scouting America adult volunteers and employees, including camp staff.
Complete Mandated Reporter Training
Visit the California Mandated Reporter Training website and complete the General Training for Volunteers.
Once completed, save a PDF copy of your training certificate. You will need to upload the certificate to Sequoia Council.
You must also complete and sign the council’s AB 506 Background Check Consent Form.
Email both documents to the Registrar using the button below:
Complete a Live Scan Background Check
Download and print the Sequoia Council BCIA 8016 Live Scan Form. Complete the Applicant Information section and bring the form to a Live Scan service provider.
It is critical that you use Sequoia Council’s Live Scan form. It contains the council’s required routing information so that your background-check results are properly delivered.
Find a nearby provider through Certifix Live Scan. Some locations accept walk-ins, while others require an appointment.
Fingerprint rolling and background-check fees will be collected by the Live Scan provider.
Complete Training for Your Position
After completing Safeguarding Youth Training, complete the training assigned to your specific volunteer position. Position-specific training helps you understand your responsibilities and gives you the tools needed to deliver a safe, effective Scouting program.
Training for unit leaders, committee members, den leaders, merit badge counselors, and other positions is available through the Training section at My.Scouting.org.
Some positions may also require in-person or outdoor training.
Connect With Your Unit
Once your application and required training have been submitted, stay in contact with your unit’s leadership. Your application must be reviewed and approved by the unit’s Chartered Organization Representative before your registration can be completed.
The unit can also help you determine whether any additional training or documentation is required for your position.

Prefer a Paper Application?
Online registration through BeAScout.org is the fastest and preferred way to apply. If you are unable to complete the online application, you may download and complete a paper adult application.
Return the completed application to your unit leader or the Sequoia Council office. Do not email an application containing sensitive personal information unless you have been given a secure submission method.
