About James E. West
James E. West was appointed to the position of Chief Scout Executive in 1910 by the founding leadership of Scouting in America. West worked with Sir Robert Baden-Powell, Daniel Carter Beard, Ernest T. Seton, and many interested community leaders to give direction to the infant program of Boy Scouts of America. On January 2, 1911, West and others formed the National Council, B.S.A. During that year the Scout Oath, Law, badges and fundamental policies were established. Under his leadership over the next 33 years, Scouting grew and matured into the program we recognize and enjoy today.
James E. West Fellowship Award
The James E. West Fellowship Award recognizes individuals, families, businesses, organizations, and Scouting units that make a significant contribution to the Sequoia Council Endowment Fund.
These gifts help build the long-term financial strength of Sequoia Council and ensure that Scouting continues to serve young people throughout Central California for generations to come.
Become a James E. West Fellow
A gift of $1,000 or more in cash or marketable securities, designated to the Sequoia Council Endowment Fund, qualifies the donor or a designated individual for recognition as a James E. West Fellow.
This contribution is made in addition to annual support of Sequoia Council and should not replace or reduce a donor’s annual Friends of Scouting contribution.
Individuals, families, businesses, organizations, and Scouting units may all establish a James E. West Fellowship.
Award Levels
The James E. West Fellowship Award includes four levels of recognition based on cumulative giving to the Sequoia Council Endowment Fund:
- Bronze – $1,000 or more
- Silver – $5,000 or more
- Gold – $10,000 or more
- Diamond – $15,000 or more
Donors may make cumulative gifts over time to reach higher levels of recognition. For example, five gifts of $1,000 would qualify the donor for Silver-level recognition.
James E. West Fellows receive the appropriate recognition medallion pin. Registered Scouters may also wear the James E. West Fellowship Award square knot on their field uniform

Honor Someone Special
A James E. West Fellowship can also be established in honor or memory of someone who has made a difference in Scouting or in our community.
A fellowship may recognize:
- An Eagle Scout
- A Silver Beaver recipient
- A dedicated Scout leader or volunteer
- A retirement or special accomplishment
- An anniversary or milestone
- A loved one or Scouter who has passed away
Individuals, families, businesses, organizations, and Scouting units may make a qualifying gift and designate another person to receive the recognition.
