Calling all prospectors and Scouts:
It’s time to return to KLONDIKE!
February 19–21, 2027 | Camp Chawanakee
For more than 30 years, the Klondike Derby has been a winter camping tradition at Camp Chawanakee.
Troops and Crews from throughout California are invited to take part in this winter Scouting adventure. For one weekend, Camp Chawanakee is transformed into the wild Yukon, where Scouts travel from town to town, test their Scouting skills, compete for gold, and put the Patrol Method into action.
Patrols will face a variety of challenges and competitions, including fire building, log sawing, Morse code, snow cannons, tomahawk throwing, and more.
Start preparing now. Build your sled, sharpen your Scout skills, prepare for winter conditions, and get your patrol ready to compete for gold and glory at Klondike!

Be Prepared for Winter Camping
You never quite know what to expect when it comes to the Klondike Derby. Some years there may be four feet of snow and others there may be no snow at all. One thing you can count on though is it will be cold.
If you spend the time to properly prepare, you will find that the Klondike is a one of a kind experience. Start planning today to get ready. We recommend each troop or patrol have a sled to help hike in your gear. It’s a good idea to have wheels that can attach to your sled in case there is no snow.
If your unit has not done winter camping before, or are not sure about what kinds of gear and clothing to bring, we have a series of training videos below that you can use to prepare for your trip. Being properly prepared is key for having an enjoyable trip to the Klondike. We also offer a list of recommended gear in the leader’s guide.
